There is no one “top” therapist out there – the key is finding the ideal one for you. You’ve heard this before – but how do you sort through the thousands of listings out there?
It’s actually quite simple, but requires a little prep work on your part. I recommend interviewing at least three therapists by phone before meeting with anyone in person. Give them some information about your situation, and ask them some focused questions, too.
During the phone interview, assess whether they ~
- have experience helping others with your particular issue
- offer customer service features you value (location? insurance? online tools?)
- are comfortable to talk to – someone you “click” with
- have a clear “therapeutic approach” that makes sense to you
Most shoppers feel least confident assessing #4. “So why does therapeutic approach matter?” you may ask. Isn’t it just about finding someone in your zip code whom you “click” with?
Not so fast.
While you may initially click with a therapist, if you don’t fully understand their therapeutic approach, it may not be long before you feel you are going around in circles, or focusing on the wrong thing. Furthermore, the therapeutic approach sets up specific power dynamic between you and your therapist. Without understanding your choice, you may find yourself feeling adrift, confused or disempowered.
FYI, Most therapists fall into one of these large umbrella categories:
Read each blurb above to get an overview. No need to go overboard, but if you want more information, Psychology Today is a good resource as well.
Full disclosure: some therapists have trouble describing their therapeutic approach to their clients; try to get as much clarification as possible over the phone. Ask if they were originally trained in one particular modality, even if they now consider themselves “eclectic” or “integrative.” Be wary of therapists who are dismissive or impatient with these questions, or who push you to schedule an appointment and say “we’ll talk about it in session.”
Finding someone who can clearly explain their therapeutic approach in a way that resonates for you – well, that’s a step in the right direction. May you feel empowered and confident as you continue your shopping experience!
